Social media and friends
Reading this I was able to fit this into my life. I to have
thousands of “friends” on Social media, but only have a handful number of
friends that I speak to on the daily and can actually depend on. Sure I have friends
all around the country I have made That I keep in contact with and I will fly out
to see them once in a while, but friends I have here in Tucson where I am from
is a very tight knit group. I attended the Disney College Program in 2014 and
since then have attended our annual “family” reunion. These are people who have
become family and although we do not always talk every day as we are busy with
our own lives and live so far from each other, once a year we all get together
and relive the memories we shared during our time at Disney World. I believe
that social media has helped in keeping contact though, because we are all able
to see how we are doing even just by liking a photo we are showing that we are
happy with how life is going for them. It gives a sense of comfort knowing that
although you are thousands of miles away, they still think of you. I also do
have “friends” who I have only met online through a mutual liking of either
videos or makeup which I consider friends even though we have never met. After
reading this I began to think how I differentiate friends and I see that those
who I consider friends are those who are like family to me and I also have “friends”
who are people I may have known or still know just don’t have a strong bond
with any more.
I also thought that this particular article "Social Media friendships" was extremely fitting personally. Within our generation meeting people online is such a norm now a days. Its incredible how many different sites, apps, and beyond so much more me have access to be able to meet people. Tools like Facebook, Match.com, even Room Surf when we were incoming freshman searching for roommates. For me my roommate ended up being my best friend, its crazy how things work that way now.
ReplyDeleteArsenio,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your blog post because you thoughtfully related the course information to your own life. It is crazy to think about the amount of websites, applications, and other technological outlets that are available for us to meet new people. I agree that being able to see a friend having a great time from across the world on Facebook for instance, gives me a sense of comfort because I know they are okay. In addition, I am able to know if they are not okay at the click of a button as well, which could also be comforting. Great job!
I really liked the direction you took this post because most of the posts on this reading focused on the bad aspects of social media today but you focused on the positive things it has done. Im a very social person, so social that I am friends with people on Facebook or Instagram that I have set next to at a concert or met in line at a six flags. Even though I know I would never see them again it does give me some joy to see that they are doing well because I want everyone to be happy. Kinda sounds corny saying it but its true, I know these people are not my real friends but they are apart of my online community and there is something really cool about that. Social media has made it possible for us to expand our social community from one country to another, a few years ago that would have never been possible. I agree with what you said at the end, after reading this article I thought about the friends I have compared to the ones that are in my text messages and the ratio is very abnormal. Its cool to have a small bond with people you may have known for 5 minutes or a strong bond with someone you have known your whole life. All because we have access to social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Great post.
