Cultivating communities of practice.
This reading is also something that is beneficial for anyone
who is trying to run a company or a business brand of any sorts. Again I agree
100 % with the fact that the Knowledge economy is different everywhere. For
example, “What someone knows in Turkey could make or break your business in
London. What a competitor’s team is learning in South America could be the
undoing of your project in Massachusetts.” Being able to market to yourself is
one thing here in the U.S. where we know how things run and work. However,
being able to market yourself to market and build across the world takes a completely
different approach and knowledge base in order to be successful. One must be
able to adapt and accept the differences and incorporate those changes into the
work of the employees in that particular area. We must also be sure to ensure a
good work place as companies are always looking for expertise and someone who
can come up with the next big thing.
Lastly I like the example they gave, “If a friend told you that he had
read many books about surgery and was ready to operate on a patient, you would
be right to decline politely. When surgeons operate on a patient, they do not
blindly apply knowledge they have learned from books or procedures they have
stored in their heads. They consider the patient’s medical history, monitor
vital signs, look at tissue, make incisions, draw conclusions, and possibly
revise the plan to make sure that procedure is constantly responsive to the
evolving situation.” Life is ever changing, and there is so much that goes into
running a company that people don’t realize.
The readings really did do a good job of showing that these other mindsets are needed for some of these businesses and ideas to succeed. I think a lot of companies that aren't doing as well as they could be don't realize that they should be asking all members and groups of the company for opinions. While it may not seem like someone in sales could help someone in engineering, the workers in sales know what the customer is looking for, so they can give the engineers a better idea on what to build.
ReplyDeleteThis reading really created a clear understanding of what communities of practice is and how they can be beneficial in many different aspects. It showed me how these are needed for businesses and communities in order to succeed and grow. I think that this is crucial in order for a community to reach their full potential. In order for people to grow in the society we have today we have to be able to listen to other's ideas and opinions and be able to converge to great an even stronger community. If people stick to the same rules and ideas, as others are changing, they will just get lost and outdated, unable to meet the needs of society. People also need to realize the communities and groups that they are in, a lot of people do not even realize the number of communities that they are apart of. In order for communities to grow, it is important for everyone to put in their input.
ReplyDeleteI too found this reading to be relevant and helpful because it is definitely true that the way a business is run and certain aspects can be different due to different economic climates. This is also information that I had not thought of myself. To me it is difficult to think that it is very different running a business in different parts of the world is all different from each other but is a concept that makes sense. I have enjoyed reading all of your posts so far as I think that they have all been relevant and helpful with the course content.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this particular reading regarding the "Cultivating Communities of Practice." The author did a fantastic job expressing how business might be run differently depending on the diversity of economic climates. I personally believe that aspect can be a huge deciding factor on how one individual will run there own business. You did a great job explaining not only the writer but your own thoughts on the subject.

ReplyDeleteYou did a great job at explaining the concepts and I appreciate how you presented different perspectives. I believe you have an interesting take on the assigned article because you explain how it can benefit anyone with a business background, or wishing to run a business in the future. In my opinion, it is of upmost importance that each member in a business understand the importance of communicating with one another. The authors highlight the importance of community participation. An example of a lack of proper communication within the text is about the Chrysler Corporation by explaining that even though they were known to be a company that possessed functional operation, each department was required to interact with one another in order to keep the company running properly, but because there was minimal communication between them, each department was not taking active responsibility for their own areas, which caused problems. In terms of your blog post, I loved the example you picked out from the text about the surgeon while simultaneously relating it to how a business is run. Every business is run differently and requires attention in different areas. Great job!
