gauging the challenge
This reading was probably a reading that had my mind jumping
back and forth. I understand why people would think that with the way
technology is advancing, there would be no jobs. I also see how people see the
opposite. I am not quite sure which side I am on at the moment. It is true,
that the more technology grows, more jobs are going to be created to be able to
accommodate the building of parts and to run diagnostics on the machine. Can
technology surpass us? Will it? I am not quite sure. I guess it is possible.
According to the reading “Microsoft founder Bill Gates has observed the trend
also and believes it’s greatly underappreciated: “Software substitution,
whether it’s for drivers or waiters or nurses
- it’s progressing,” He also went on to say “Technology over time will
reduce demand for jobs…. Twenty years from now, labor demand for lots of skill
sets will be substantially lower. I don’t think people have that in their
mental model.”
Another snippet in the reading states “in 1997 a computer
could beat the world’s greatest chess player yet could not physically move the
pieces on the board. But again, the technology need only time, a few more doublings
of power. The skills of physical work are also not immune to the advance of
infotech."
We are living in a very technologically driven world and in my opinion we will just have to see what the future holds.
Arsenio,
ReplyDeleteI agree that I am not sure which side I am on because although robots do take away jobs, they also create new ones because they need to be built and taken care of in case of a malfunction for instance. Hopefully the rest of the readings/book will give us more insight on the subject so that we can make a clear argument as to which side we are on. It is wild to think that the work force has dramatically shifted and will continue to evolve. Do you think that robots should be utilized in classrooms? Great work!
This week my mind has gone back and forth as well. After coming across the thought of technology advanced to the point jobs can decrease is mind blowing. It's crazy to think how we have gotten to this point but deeply thinking about it for some reason isn't surprising. Before reading this I wasn't aware that robots have already been created to do labor and now have already been at work. Crazy to think about. Overall great post!
